They’ve legalised it! Reggae’s classic ganja anthems. Himnos a la marihuana.

Bad news for the Jamaican recording industry: the island’s government plans to decriminalise the possession of small amounts of marijuana. «Approval has [also] been given also to a proposal for the decriminalisation of the use of ganja for religious purposes,» according to the minister of justice.

The late Peter Tosh, whose 1976 debut album was called Legalize It, might feel a sense of vindication, but will this news leave songs such as that record’s title track or John Holt’s insurrectionary Police in Helicopter (“If you continue to burn up the herbs, we’re going to burn down the cane fields”) sounding like quaint timepieces?

What’s certain is that from Bob Marley through to contemporary stars like Konshens, songs about smoking weed have been a staple of the Jamaican recording industry. Here, in a Spotify playlist, is a small selection, with further suggestions welcome.
